Chikuma was a Tone-class heavy cruiser designed for long-range reconnaissance and to support aircraft carrier formations. Her eight 203 mm guns were mounted in four turrets at the bow, freeing up the aft deck for floatplane operations. She participated in many of the Japanese Navy’s major operations before meeting her end during the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944.
