ZH-1 was originally laid down as Dutch destroyer Gerard Callenburgh in 1938. She was captured by the Germans in 1940 and completed in 1942 with some alterations to the original armament. During the Second World War, this destroyer served mainly off the coast of France and was sunk during the Normandy Landings at the Battle of Ushant in June 1944.
She is armed with 120 mm guns arranged in an uncommon configuration: a twin-gun mount and single-gun mount sit at the stern, while a twin-gun turret is positioned forward. Like other German destroyers, her HE shells benefit from improved penetration, though their maximum damage is slightly lower. Her AP shells hit harder, but the combination of turret layout and a long reload makes trading fire with enemy destroyers challenging.
