Welcome back to the Judith Plains Montana Farm Timelapse. Today’s focus is large-scale soil preparation using anhydrous ammonia application, combining cultivation and fertilization in a single pass. We begin by filling the tanks on both cultivators and transporting two tractors equipped with anhydrous ammonia injection systems to the field. This setup allows us to perform deep cultivation while simultaneously applying nitrogen directly into the soil, optimizing input efficiency and reducing future passes.
The large field is worked in parallel. One tractor is operated manually, while the second runs under hired worker control, ensuring consistent coverage and maximum field productivity. Once the first section is complete, both units are relocated to additional fields, where hired workers continue the ammonia cultivation cycle.
With soil preparation underway, we shift to equipment upgrades. A visit to the dealer center results in the purchase of a new 36-meter planter, selected specifically to match the scale of our large fields and reduce operational time per hectare.
The new planter is first deployed on a plowed field, where we sow wheat. Due to field size, multiple refills of seeds and fertilizer are required to complete the job. After finishing wheat planting, the seeder is relocated to a field already cultivated with anhydrous ammonia, where a hired worker begins sowing cotton.
Meanwhile, the tractors that completed ammonia cultivation are reassigned to another large field, maintaining continuous soil preparation across the farm. To maximize output, we switch to another high-horsepower tractor, attach a second seeder, and move to a fertilized field to plant sorghum.
This episode demonstrates synchronized soil management, nitrogen fertilization, large-width planting technology, and multi-crop rotation planning, keeping production scalable and efficient across multiple fields simultaneously.
